The research group is a multidisciplinary team comprised of Mechanical, Electrical and Computer, and Geomatics Engineering faculty, staff, and students that integrates engineering disciplines of mechanical systems, vibrations, geomatics, power, robotics and control, microcontrollers and embedded systems, communications, and optics. The team has been heavily involved supporting the farming community within the Central Valley of California , and has parterned with UC Merced and the UC Merced Cooperative Extension through a UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Grant by applying UAS technology toward precision farming. Additionally, the Fresno State UAS research team has partnered with Sonoma State University and Napa Valley College via a NASA Grant to implement " Rising Data " -- a flight curriculum development project whose purpose is to increase interest in University engineering programs and NASA-related career pathways. In years past, the team also worked closely with Edwards Air Force Base , providing on-site flight tests and a demonstration of a first generation UAS prototype using a laser-designator system that employed redundant inertial sensor packages for gimbal control and implemented several communication and data protocols, including telemetry information and real-time digital video to a ground station. The goals of USRT are to: Educate and train undergraduate and graduate students in a multidisciplinary environment emphasizing UAS applications. Provide an opportunity for applied systems integration research in UAS technology within the Central Valley of California. Provide students with hands-on, real engineering experiences within an academic environment. Train students in FAA flight test regulations and the importance of adhering to exacting engineering specifications. Partner with local, state, and national companies and agencies relating to UAS technology. is a part of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International and is supported by internal and external investments at Fresno State.
